BID-Milton Awarded 4 Star Rating by Hospital Compare

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton (BID-Milton) was recently awarded a 4 Star rating, on a scale of one to five, by Hospital Compare, a federal government, consumer-oriented website created by Medicare and the Hospital Quality Alliance.

BID-Milton is the only hospital in the greater Milton and South Shore area to earn a 4 star rating. According to Hospital Compare and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, only about 33% of hospitals nationwide earn a 4 star rating. No hospital in the greater Milton and South Shore area earned a 5 star rating.

The Hospital Compare rating was determined by measuring 64 nationally accepted quality of care indicators for several common conditions including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia as well as surgery. It also was compiled by using patient experience, timeliness of care, patient safety, treatment efficiency and outcomes of care as additional measurements. This information was then converted into a 1 to 5 star rating system, with 5 stars being the highest rating possible. The ratings were then posted on Hospital Compare (www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov) which provides information on how well hospitals provide care that meets nationally accepted standards. The website is intended by the federal government to assist consumers in making informed healthcare decisions.

“This is a significant accomplishment for BID-Milton,” explained Alex Campbell, RN, director of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety at the hospital. “The Hospital Compare rating system measures how closely hospital staff and physicians implement standards of care that have been shown to improve the safety and quality of the care we provide to our patients. We are pleased that the hard work and commitment of the members of our care team are being reflected by this national rating system developed by the federal government.”

Added Ashley Yeats, MD, the hospital’s chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare quality and clinical integration, “Quality of care and patient safety is at the center of everything we do. BID-Milton has made a substantial investment in resources and staff over the last several years to create a robust and comprehensive quality and safety program that is worthy of recognition.”

In addition to receiving a 4 star rating from Hospital Compare, BID-Milton also was recently awarded an “A” grade in patient safety from the nationally recognized LeapFrog Group, placing the hospital in the top 25% of hospitals nationwide. Earlier in 2016, BID-Milton was named to the Harvard Pilgrim Hospital Honor Roll, placing it in the top 25% of hospitals surveyed nationally.
